Department of Human Development Center Opportunities
As a student in the Master’s in Human Development
program, students may have opportunities to become involved
with the Department’s three centers.

daily program for older adults, providing various therapeutic
activities, nutritional lunch and snacks, exercise, and
opportunities of socialization and intergenerational contacts.
Family Therapy Center, http://www.familytherapy.vt.edu/ftc.html ---
a therapy center for those seeking individual, couple,
or family therapy.
Child Development Center for Learning and Research, http://www.humandevelopment.vt.edu/cdclr.html ---
a parent-child-school program for young children between
infancy and 5 years of age.
Certificate Programs
Virginia Tech offers a variety of certificate programs
that you may pursue in conjunction with your Master’s
Degree in Human Development, including:
Graduate Certificate in Gerontology, http://www.gerontology.vt.edu/certificate.html requires
courses in social, psychological, and physical aspects
of aging, including electives that enable students to tailor
their studies to accommodate their interests. The curriculum
includes a practicum and research on a topic in gerontology.
University Center Opportunities
Center for Gerontology, http://www.gerontology.vt.edu---Established
in 1977 to foster multidisciplinary activities in the field
of aging. Its primary emphases are on applied and basic
gerontological research that enhances the quality of life
for older adults, education and outreach activities, course
offerings in gerontology, and an expanding network of community
agencies and organizations.
Center for Interdisciplinary Studies (CIS), http://www.idst.vt.edu---
encourages students to consider the aesthetic, ethical,
political, scientific, and technical dimensions of human
experience and culture and to recognize the commonality
and diversity of human experience, beliefs, and practices.
CIS emphasizes global and environmental interdependence
and social responsibility as part of its effort to prepare
students for a lifetime of cultural, social, environmental,
and technological change.
Center for Public Administration and Policy (CPAP), http://www.cpap.vt.edu ---provides
challenging applied and theoretical professional development
opportunities in public management and public policy to
qualified public administrators currently in service, and
early-career students who intend to become public administrators.
Center for Information Technology Impact on Children,
Youth and Families, http://www.citicyf.clahs.vt.edu---provides
a focus for research and outreach related to the human
dimensions of information technology, generates critical
insights and data on issues of concern to families, educators,
policymakers, and business and agency leaders. The center
also serves as a resource to students in the Master's Degree in Human Development concentration course in families and
technology.
Certified Family Life Educator Program
The National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) has developed
a Certified Family Life Educator Program (CFLE). Please
consult the NCFR website, http://www.ncfr.com,
for further information on this program. While this Master's
program does not automatically lead to CFLE certfication,
some of its courses are applicable.The undergraduate Human
Services program at Virginia Tech is an approved NCFR CFLE
program.
